Check out Australia Zoo’s American Alligator!

Don’t miss all of the jaw-snapping alligator action here at Australia Zoo.  Our amazing American alligators can be spotted soaking up the Sun’s rays and meeting our guests at Australia Zoo’s Photography Studio.  Get hands-on with these beautiful reptiles and see for yourself why Steve called them “frogs with sharp teeth!”

One look at these perfect predators and it is obvious that they are creatures from the distant past.  American alligators have been on the planet, as you see them today, for over 65 million years. Crikey!

These incredible animals are found throughout fresh water swamps and lakes in south eastern United States, and they are crucial to their environment.  They play an important role in maintaining healthy and stable waterways.

Alligators feed on fish, small mammals, birds and even other reptiles.  They use their long muscular tail to propel themselves through the water in search of their prey.  Capable of living up to and over 70 years of age and growing to be 3 to 4.5 metres (10 to 15 feet ) long, these reptiles are truly amazing!

American alligators are one of the most vocal species of crocodilian.  They have a series of bellows and growls that they use to communicate with each other.  Keep your ears open at the Zoo, as you might witness for yourself our large male calling out to the females.  As stoic as they are, they are still not indestructible and do fall victim to waterway pollution as well as being hunted for their skins and meat.

The American alligator is a story of success.  They have come back from the brink of extinction and are currently a species that is now well represented in the wild.  You little ripper!
