The skink

The skink

It is distributed in all tropical regions of the world (as well as temperate regions of North America), but the most species are in Southeast Asia and its nearby islands. In China, they are mainly distributed in Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangsu,Zhejiang and other regions. They are agile and generally active during the day. They often go in and out of the grass, stone piles and roadsides. In case of disturbance, they quickly flee to a nearby hiding place to hide. The main food of skinks is insects, and most of these insects are pests. Therefore, they are good friends of mankind. Because the stone dragon looks like a snake, but it has four more feet than the snake, it is also commonly known as “quadruped snake”. Because it has the word “snake”, many people are afraid of being poisoned after being bitten by it. In fact, the “quadruped snake” stone dragon is neither a snake nor a bite. The tail of skinks will fall off immediately after being caught, but they can still live normally. After a while, they will gradually grow new tails. This physiological phenomenon is called “regeneration”. Most of them only eat insects or their larvae, but the larger skinks also eat small vertebrates or some plants. Skink is also a valuable Chinese herbal medicine.
